Why a coin will get cheaper to make

The price a seller charges is built on what a coin costs to produce. Forever changed four things about producing it, and all four point the same way.

The short version

Forever made gold cheaper to farm than any previous Classic version: gathering is free from level three, camping removes the trips back to town, and an account-wide perk adds up to a fifth to what a route yields. Cheaper production is the one thing that reliably lowers what you pay, so this page matters more to a buyer than any news item.

Four changes

What each one does to output

Facts from the BlizzCon Deep Dive and the September 18 breakdown. The right-hand column is our reading and is labelled as such.

ChangeWhat it isOur reading: effect on production
Free gathering at level 3A quest around level 3 or 4 hands out a manual for Herbalism, Mining or Skinning and teaches it outright if a slot is openLargest on the list. In every earlier version gathering was a deliberate choice made by people who already knew the game. Here it is the default, so week-one supply arrives far heavier than Classic veterans expect
CampingA campfire placed almost anywhere becomes a campsite with vendors, repairs, workspaces and buffs; each player may set down one object from their own professionTravel is the cap on an evening's farming, and this removes most of it. Expect output per player per hour to rise
600+ recipes, blueprints from bossesNew recipes across every profession and skill range; the better camping objects come from blueprints dropped by dungeon bossesPushes the first month toward gathering. You cannot craft what you have not found, and crafted goods spend week one losing to quest greens
Legacy perksA point the first time each tradeskill passes 150, 225 and 300, earned account-wide; Bountiful Harvest runs five ranks for up to 20% more scarce materialsA fifth more rare materials on the same route, compounding across alts. The gap between a prepared gatherer and a casual one is wider than it has ever been

What the same gold costs in money

At today's cheapest board price, $0.79 a coin on PvP. We are not going to publish gold-per-hour figures for a game nobody has played at level 60 — that number does not exist yet, and inventing it would be the easiest lie on this site.

AmountCost at $0.79 a coinWhat it is for
20g$15.80the smallest order any seller will take
50g$39.50bags and a few ranks at the trainer
100g$79.00the first tier of riding
250g$197.50a profession pushed past its expensive middle
500g$395.00a guild's consumables for one raid night
1,000g$790.00the top tier of riding, the biggest sink in the game

Riding costs confirmed at 100 and 1,000 gold by tier, mount included. The riding page →

Questions

Which profession makes the most gold?

Unknown, and a level-30 beta cannot answer it. The design points at gathering for the first month: ore and herbs sell the day the game opens, while the crafted goods worth money need blueprints that drop in dungeons nobody has cleared.

Does any of this help me if I am buying rather than farming?

Directly. Everything on this page lowers what a coin costs to make, and that is the number a seller's price is built on. A buyer who understands the supply side knows when to wait.

Is cooking worth it this time?

It has a use now: cooked food gives stats and a small experience bonus. That turns the most skipped profession in the original game into steady demand rather than a novelty.

What is camping, in one sentence?

A campfire placed in the open world becomes a campsite with vendors, repairs, workspaces and buffs, so a farmer stops walking back to town.
