GDKP is out. Gold will not get cheaper
Nearly every write-up of this decision concludes that demand falls, so the price falls. The second half does not follow from the first, and there is a precedent that shows it.
The short version
GDKP was the biggest reason anyone held a large balance in Classic, and it is gone before Forever ships. That shrinks the number of trades in this market. It does not shrink the price of a coin, which is set by what the coin costs to farm. When the same ban was tried in 2024, the price went up, not down.
Three reasons, in Blizzard's framing
- It is bound up with real-money trading in players' minds, whatever any individual raid is doing.
- It grows until it displaces the guild as the way people organise themselves.
- It prices out players without a balance, because the route to good loot becomes money rather than showing up.
- Alongside it: the economy will be watched, with laundered gold reversed when it is found.
What follows, and what does not
| The claim you will read | What actually follows |
|---|---|
| Demand collapses, so the price falls | Demand falling cuts the number of trades. Supply here is elastic — a farmer who cannot sell simply farms less, rather than selling at a loss — so the price per coin barely moves |
| The gold market is finished | It is smaller. Riding at 100 and 1,000 gold, consumables for three raids on December 9, professions and repairs are all still there and none of them were auction-driven |
| Sellers will undercut each other to survive | Some will exit instead. Exits reduce competition, which pushes the other way |
| What actually lowers the price | Cheaper production. Free gathering, camping and Legacy perks do more to the number than this announcement does |
The same ban, February 2024
GDKP was banned in Season of Discovery from February 8, 2024, across SoD, the Anniversary realms and Hardcore. Classic Era kept it. This is what players reported afterwards.
| When | What players reported |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | The price of gold dipped |
| Week 2 | It had more than doubled against the level on the day the ban was announced. The forum thread is titled “GDKP ban has done nothing” |
| The explanation offered there | People who had funded their raiding by running GDKPs on alts lost that income and started buying instead |
| Later in the season | The complaint inverted: the price collapsed. The reason given was bots, not buyers |
Our reading: 2024 is evidence that removing GDKP moves volume around rather than setting the price, and that what sets the price is how cheaply a coin can be produced. Those are player reports on a forum, not measurements — but they are the only record of that episode anyone has.
Questions
Is GDKP really not allowed?
Yes. Said during the live Q&A of September 17, 2026: GDKP raids will not be allowed in Forever. Not limited, not discouraged.
So gold gets cheaper?
Almost certainly not, and that is the whole point of this page. Removing buyers removes trades. The price per coin is set by what a coin costs to produce, which nothing here touches.
Did the 2024 ban work?
Depends what “work” means. It ended the format on those realms. It did not lower the price of gold: the price dipped for about a week and then more than doubled, by the account of the players complaining about it at the time.
What replaces it for gearing up?
Guild runs, loot council, plain rolls, and turning up often enough that people want you along. Slower, and free.
